An after-hours answering service that answers at 2 a.m. and rings your team when it matters
Vomenta answers your phone after closing with an AI agent that knows your hours, your prices and your emergency policy. A time-check step in your call flow sends only the calls outside your hours to the agent. It takes the message, texts your on-call staff, and for an emergency rings them in the app and stays on the line until someone picks up.

What an after-hours answering service is
An after-hours answering service answers your business phone when the office is closed, so callers reach someone instead of voicemail. A traditional after-hours call center staffs operators overnight and charges per call or per minute, often with a night surcharge. Vomenta's version is an AI agent that answers after-hours calls at once, takes the message, texts the person on call and, for an emergency, rings your own staff in the app.
Three ways to cover the phone after closing
Voicemail
Free and silent. Most callers hang up without leaving a message, and an emergency waits until morning.
After-hours call center
Operators answer overnight from a script and relay a message. You pay per call or per minute, usually with a night and weekend surcharge, and the operator does not know your customers.
AI after-hours answering with your staff on call
An AI agent answers from your knowledge base and records, texts the on-call number and rings your own team in the app when the call is an emergency. Vomenta is this kind.
How after-hours calls reach the AI and daytime calls reach your team
One step in your call flow decides. You keep your number, your daytime routing and your team's phones; only the calls outside your hours change hands.
- 01
Your number lands in a call flow
Point your existing number or a new one at a call flow in the app. The flow is a drag-and-drop canvas, and the time-check step is the first thing in it.
- 02
The time-check step reads the clock against your hours
It compares the current time, in the timezone you set on the step or on your workspace, with the schedule you chose: your own weekly hours, a fixed extended window from Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., around the clock, or a custom schedule.
- 03
Open hours ring your team
During your hours the flow routes the call to your team's agents in the app, exactly as it does today, with voicemail or a scheduled callback if nobody is free.
- 04
Closed hours go to the AI agent
Outside your hours the flow routes the call to the AI agent. The caller hears your greeting, not a closed message, and the agent handles the call as described below.
Holidays. The time-check step follows your weekly hours. It does not read the holiday calendar in your settings yet. On a public holiday, point the number at the AI agent for the day, or run the agent around the clock so the question never comes up.
An emergency answering service with your on-call staff one ring away
Routine calls end with a message. An emergency ends with a person. Your instructions decide which is which.
- 01
The agent asks your emergency questions in order
You write them in the instructions: the address, what is happening, whether anyone is at risk. The agent asks them in order and does not move on until it has the answers.
- 02
It texts the person on call
While still on the line it sends an SMS, a WhatsApp message or an email with the collected details to the on-call number you set, and tells the caller the callback time from your emergency policy.
- 03
For a live handoff it rings your on-call team in the app
If the caller asks for a person, or your instructions say the emergency needs one, the agent transfers the call to the team you chose. Their phones ring in the Vomenta app, and the agent keeps the caller company while they ring.
- 04
After two minutes with no answer, it says so and finishes the call
The agent tells the caller that nobody is available right now, confirms the message has gone to the on-call line, repeats the callback time and saves the transcript for the morning.
Outside numbers. The agent texts and emails the on-call number, and it rings your staff in the app. It cannot dial a mobile phone outside the app by itself. If you want the caller connected to an outside number, use a transfer step in the call flow.
Three after-hours phone answering calls
The tool lines show what the agent does in your systems while it talks. The wording is yours to set in the instructions.
- Caller“There's water coming through the ceiling of my shop.”
- AI agent“I can help. What is the address, and can you reach the main water valve safely?”
- Caller“18 Mill Street. I've just turned it off.”
- ToolSend SMS to the on-call technician
- AI agent“I've sent this to our on-call technician as an emergency. They will call you within 20 minutes. Please keep clear of the wet area until they arrive.”
- Caller“I'd like to book a check-up, any day next week.”
- ToolLook up contact
- ToolCheck available slots
- AI agent“I have Tuesday at 10:30 or Thursday at 2. Which one suits you?”
- Caller“Tuesday.”
- ToolBook appointment
- AI agent“Booked for Tuesday at 10:30. I've texted you the confirmation.”
- Caller“I really need to talk to someone tonight.”
- AI agent“I'll ring our on-call team now. While they pick up, what is this about, so they have it in front of them?”
- ToolTransfer to the on-call team
- AI agent“I'm sorry, nobody on the team is free right now. I've sent your message to the on-call line and someone will call you back before 8 a.m. Is this the best number?”
24/7 and 24-hour answering: four ways to set the hours
The same agent covers an evening, a weekend or the whole clock. The difference is one setting on the time-check step, or no time-check at all.
After-hours only
Time-check on your weekly hours. Your office answers during the day, the AI agent takes evenings, nights and weekends. The most common setup.
Nights and weekends on a custom schedule
A custom schedule on the time-check step, for example 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and all day Saturday, in your timezone. Calls outside it go to the agent.
24/7 AI first
Point the number straight at the agent. It answers every call, day and night, and rings your team whenever a person is needed. Nothing waits in a queue, and there is no after-hours boundary to manage.
Holidays and closures
The time-check does not read your holiday calendar. For a closure day, route the number to the agent for the day or switch to the 24/7 setup.
What your after-hours virtual receptionist leaves for the morning
Nothing from the night lives in a separate inbox. It is all on the contact, in the app your team already opens at 8 a.m.
Transcripts and summaries on each contact
Every after-hours call is saved on the caller's contact with the transcript, a summary and the recording, so the person who calls back reads it first.
Messages already delivered
The texts and emails the agent sent during the night are in the contact timeline, with the time they went out and to whom.
Voicemails with a playback link
If your flow offers voicemail, each one arrives by email with the caller's number, the duration and a link to play it. The transcript appears in the app's voicemail list.
Scheduled callbacks in a list
A scheduled-callback step lets the caller leave a number for a callback within a window you set, from one hour to a week. The callbacks wait in a list for your team.
After-hours answering by industry
Each industry page has its own after-hours flow, example calls, knowledge-base list and emergency questions.

More about AI voice agents →- 01
Write the after-hours instructions
Tell the agent what to say when the office is closed, what counts as an emergency and what callback time to promise.
- 02
Upload the knowledge base
Add your hours, prices, service area and emergency policy as PDF, Word or text files. The agent answers from them.
- 03
Set the on-call number and team
Enter the number that receives the SMS and the team whose phones ring in the app for an emergency.
- 04
Add the time-check step to your call flow
Open your number's call flow, add a time-check step on your hours, route closed hours to the agent, publish, and call it after closing from your own phone.
After-hours call center or AI after-hours answering?
A night-shift call center puts an operator on the call. Vomenta puts an AI agent on it, with your own on-call staff one ring away.
| After-hours call center | Vomenta after-hours answering | |
|---|---|---|
| Answer time at night | Callers wait when the night shift is busy, which happens in a storm or a cold snap. | Every call is answered at once, however many arrive together. |
| Night and weekend pricing | Per call or per minute, often with a surcharge for nights, weekends and holidays. | $64 per month for the smallest setup, plus 1.5¢ per inbound minute at any hour. |
| What the answerer knows | A script and your on-call list. | Your knowledge base and your records: prices, service area, policies, orders and account history. |
| Emergency handling | An operator relays a message to the on-call number. | The agent asks your questions, texts the on-call number and rings your on-call team in the app. |
| Who takes over | Another operator at the service. | Your own on-call staff, with the transcript on screen. |
| In the morning | A message log by email. | Transcripts, summaries, recordings and sent messages on each contact, voicemails with a playback link, callbacks in a list. |

After-hours answering service: common questions
What is an after-hours answering service?
An after-hours answering service answers your business phone when the office is closed, so callers reach someone instead of voicemail. Vomenta's version is an AI agent that answers at once, takes the message, texts the person on call and, for an emergency, rings your own staff in the app. A time-check step in your call flow decides which calls go to it.
Does it work on weekends and public holidays?
Weekends, yes: the time-check step follows the weekly hours you set, so a Saturday afternoon or a Sunday night goes to the agent if your hours say the office is closed. Public holidays are not read from the holiday calendar yet. For a closure day, route the number to the agent for the day, or run the agent around the clock.
How does it handle an emergency call at night?
It asks the questions you wrote in the instructions, such as the address and whether anyone is at risk, then sends the details by SMS, WhatsApp or email to the on-call number you set and tells the caller the callback time from your policy. If the caller asks for a person or your instructions require one, it rings your on-call team in the Vomenta app and keeps talking until someone answers.
Can it forward the call to my on-call technician's mobile?
Not by itself. The agent texts and emails the on-call number and rings your staff in the app on a computer or phone. It cannot dial a mobile outside the app. If you want the caller connected to an outside number, add a transfer step to the call flow.
What happens if nobody on the team picks up?
The agent stays with the caller while the team's phones ring. After two minutes with no answer it tells the caller that nobody is available, confirms that the message has gone to the on-call line, repeats the callback time and saves the transcript and summary on the contact.
Do I pay more for calls at night or on weekends?
No. Calls are metered at 1.5¢ per inbound minute at any hour, and the monthly price is $64 for the smallest setup: one Starter seat at $29 plus the AI Voice Agent add-on at $35. AI usage is billed at the provider's cost plus a markup, or with no markup on your own provider key. There is no per-call fee and no surcharge.
Can callers still leave a voicemail?
Yes. Add a voicemail step to the flow for the callers who prefer it, or for the moments the agent cannot help. Each voicemail is emailed to your admins with the caller's number, the duration and a playback link, and its transcript appears in the app's voicemail list.
Can it book appointments after hours?
If your booking or practice software has an API, the agent checks slots and books, changes or cancels through a custom HTTP tool at any hour. There is no ready-made Google or Microsoft calendar connector. Without an API, the agent records the request and emails or texts it to your office for the morning.
